Prof. Hal Weaver’s 10 Commandments for Improving Learning and Teaching in Using Film/Video
I. Thou shalt preview a film before using it.
II. Thou shalt give students specific questions before a screening.
III. Thou shalt facilitate appropriate, preliminary warm-up learning activities.
IV. Thou shalt leave lights on during a screening.
V. Thou shalt strat the debriefing immediately after a screening, eliciting both affective and cognitive responses when possible or desirable.
VI. Thou shalt use clips, not the whole film, when pedagogically desirable.
VII. Thou shalt not use film as filler.
VIII. Thou shalt not use boring, so-called “educational” films.
IX. Thou shalt use the form (art) of film to better understand the films.
X. Thou shalt have fun using film, with sound pedagogical objectives, processes, and results.
