Weekend Course at Pendle Hill Spring 2007:

“Lift Every Voice and Sing ”: Paul Robeson and Bayard Rustin

A weekend with Hal Weaver

March 30-April 1 2007

Celebrate and critically explore the productive lives and works of two major figures of the 20th century. How did Paul Robeson and Bayard Rustin, both African-Americans with Quaker roots, use their extraordinary gifts in music, words, and deeds to implement their leadings as human rights activists and leaders in the United States and abroad? We will screen films, listen to recordings, share readings, and respond to mini-lectures.

For more than forty years Hal Weaver has been teaching, lecturing, and writing in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas about the Black experience. Paul Robeson is a passion. Writings by Bayard Rustin are included in a forthcoming anthology of works by Black Quakers that Hal is coordinating. A member of Wellesley Friends Meeting (MA), Hal currently focuses on his national and international ministry: using the arts to enhance racial justice and international understanding through The ChinaFilm Project, The BlackFilm Project, and The BlackQuaker Project. A graduate of Westtown School and Haverford College, Hal holds a doctorate in international education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
